World Watch

While there is still tons of smoke in the air here (as far as I can see there is a lack of proper equipment to kill the fires). Also, in the last days I had been running across demonstartions and food strikes and burning tires besides the motorways around Easter. Not the same as in some other places of the world. Actually, I wanna point at a few interesting things that I stumbled across the last days (besides that it is getting spring in Europe):

  • Haiti is starving (and rioting) because the food prices hiked like around double in one year – and these prices are still incredibly low for people in developed countries… (as comparison, here in BsAs, the cheapest pizza for one person is like 2 EUR, which is still a lot for people here).
  • Zimbabwe is struggeling to take the step from the phase of liberation to the phase of democracy. It shows the problem of a creator to step back from his creation.
  • Italy may be one county, but as TIME reports, there are huge discrepancies between the north and the South. I will not comment on the latest elections there.
  • My friend Hanna wrote (in Swedish tho) a while ago about the electrical crisis in South Africa (Wikipedia has a short summary of facts). In essence she writes that because the producers cannot meet the demand of electricity, the cities switched to a “controlled power-out system”, where the power gets turned off for a few hours (2 to 4) daily – with announcement in the newspapers. Still, people get stuck in elevators, sit in the dark and companies go bankrupt. Gonna be interesting to see how this will work for the FIFA World CUP 2010, but this also just poses a huge danger for the stability of a emerging nation.
  • And something nice at the end: TIME’s report on Barack Obama’s mom. At least for me it was inspiring. :)

So the last part that is missing now are the readers questions, I will start answering them soon. :)

Thanks a lot, Woffe, for your long reports on April 18 – in spite of crashing browsers etc! (That excuses many of your spelling mistakes ;-) I already now enjoy the thought of discussing your observations face to face. Love, your mom

    Hi,

I was reading your blog and i found intresting the news from Haiti but it’s a fact, Rich people die because they are fat, poor people die because they are starving. can we do something about it?, yes we can…

Well, the spelling mistakes are my and not the browser’s fault. One thing at least has not changed: I still cannot read what has been written by me. ;)

Looking forward to face-to-face reports with you, mom, and all the others as well! :)
