snowboarding

Finally I got the possibility to test snowboarding. Last time, in 2004, when I wanted to test it I unfortunately could not join the trip. So now on Saturday was the big day.

Growing up on skis with snowboards becoming more common when I was like 14 and only the “kool kids” would be snowboarding (a.k.a. sit in the snow, smoke, chat and listen to punk), makes me a skier at heart. Having the chance to go down the slope I’d prefer that to more or less anything else in the world. I’d definitely not sit there in the cold.

Ok, I have not being practicing skiing so much either in the last years mostly because of time and money reasons – you use the whole weekend if you want to go skiing and it is expensive – I sticked to biking on snow. You can go for 2 hours for free, no problem. So skiing happened in intervals of around 2-3 years. Still, I was and am a skier.

I had a skateboard but never really learned it since I was too old to get it tought from 10-year old brats (and they were way cooler…). So the feeling was supposed to be kinda familiar. And so it was. After first mounting the wrong foot to the front and falling quite a bit, it started to go better and better. And the fith time going down the hill went already pretty well with the only problem of turning valley-wards and picking up speed.

Since we planned to go for a skiing weekend in the Norwegian mountains, I’ll give snowboarding another try. The biggest challenge now being to learn to follow the board insetad of – skiing style – forcing it to go where you want to. So I’ll guess that it will be more fun like that, also because we should be going with many internationals who are not that experienced. So skiing alone would be boring.

But I still already realised that I’ll always be a skier at heart. Sorry, I’m just not kool enough. But that’s allright. Now I at least can say that I tried it and still prefer the two planks. ;)
