So I’m back in Olso again after a long weekend in Gothenburg filled with frisbee playing, early mornings and long evenings. As every year in January the Wintertrophy took place in Gothenburg’s Lundby Strand sports centre – some sports halls in the docks at the north side of Göta Älv, not far from my uni. Even though I just was watching it once in 2005 when freshly moved to Gothenburg it felt pretty much like my home tournament, mostly because most of my ultimate playing happened there by now. So I also expected to see some familiar faces and actually hoped to be able to play against some old team mates. Funny enough my wish became true and we should meet Lords of Flopptown, a team collecting players from different places, amongst others Marcus and Alex, two more than solid players. Being there as support to Stovner, a team from Oslo, meant that we (there were two other ones from our EZ Ultimate playing group) had to adapt pretty much to their playing and tactics. This subjugation to their moves and strategy was IMHO the toughest task since it often contradicted my intuition.
With Feldrenner (the German outdoor champ from 2006) and Ragnarok (the Danish champ from 2006) in addition to Lords of Flopptown we had a rather difficult group and I was actually hoping to at least be able to win against my old friends. In contrast we lost all the group games even though our performance was getting better from game to game. No wonder with the first game starting at 0800 and us arriving 15 minutes in advance when the opponents already were grouping on the court talking tactics.
After the group games we got into the play-off part that should decide about rank 16 through 32. With us playing better and better, the matches got tighter and we finally won the 5th and last match of the day. Fierce fighting was needed but finally a victory for us based on the experience of the team.
Finally some rest for all of us, which we were all really glad for and after taking it easy for some hours, it was time to party with billard and going out dancing. While most others seemed to go home the latest around 2 o’clock at night, the hard core of us stayed out until 4. The result of this was rather little sleep and a very tough match against fresh and young Danes on early Sunday morning at 0745. Fighting hard we managed to win the fight but that game even made me feel old. After another break it was time for the long-awaited (mostly to get over with it) last game. Unfortunately we lost that one but I think most people in our team were anyways glad that it all was over. So we stayed still to cheer for our girls who won their last and only game in a experienced manner. While the rest left back to Norway I stayed to watch the final and then for a long nap before my bus left.
Personally I can say that I am satisfied with my performance at the tournament – being my first real tournament with all ambitious teams. I would have liked to have a bit more of a free hand to play but for the good of the team I could most contribute in defense (running after others) and as receiver waiting in the end zone for the pass. So now I really look forward to playing freely and less ambitiously again but honestly speaking I hope to play aome tournament again (maybe then with better suitable tactics).
